About the Gallery
Founded in 1965 by celebrated potter Janet Leach, the New Craftsman Gallery is one of the UK’s most enduring and respected art spaces. For over sixty years, it has been part of the fabric of St Ives, showcasing both modern and contemporary craft and art.Originally renowned for studio ceramics by Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach, the gallery later expanded to include painting, supporting the early careers of St Ives artists such as Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Bryan Wynter.Located at the foot of the hill leading to the Barbara Hepworth Museum, the gallery occupies a characterful historic building of five light-filled rooms, each offering a unique setting for contemporary art and craft.
